HESS electric bus on the BGU network

BGU Busbetrieb Grenchen und Umgebung AG has been pursuing a strategy for reducing CO2 since it started using CNG (natural gas) buses in 2005. It is now continuing this strategy by deploying the first purely electric buses. From December 2021, a 12-metre long lighTram® 12 Plug low floor electric bus from HESS, the Swiss bus manufacturer in Bellach, will be brought into operation for a fixed test period of three years.

Some of the inclines at the southern foot of the Jura are very steep and this has an impact on the BGU’s operating profile. Electric drive offers the ideal conditions for handling this. The bus speeds up quietly and powerfully even on steep inclines and recovers the braking energy when going back downhill. The future flagship of the BGU offers space for around 80 passengers, is equipped with the latest bus building technologies and also has a state-of-the-art design. There is no diesel motor in the rear, which means that the full extent of the passenger area can be used in the best way possible. It also guarantees more space and barrier-free access. A further highlight is the panoramic window at the back, which not only provides a good view of the road but also fills the rear of the bus with natural light. The external mirrors have been replaced with external cameras and internal monitors. The electric bus is charged in the depot, generally overnight, and contributes towards reducing CO2 levels. The electric heating system also means that no fine dust is emitted, even in winter.
