Brisbane Metro passes one million passengers

The new Fastcharge bus system in Brisbane has reached an impressive milestone in a very short space of time: just three months after the M2 line went into operation, the one millionth passenger has already been counted. Since January 2025, the all-electric lighTram® 25 TOSA vehicles from HESS have been operating on the route between the University of Queensland and the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital as part of the metro project.

The M2 line replaces the heavily frequented former 66 bus and now offers significantly greater passenger comfort and a massive increase in capacity. Since its launch, daily capacity has been increased by 9,200 seats, with passenger numbers rising by 44 per cent year-on-year in the period from 15 March to 3 April alone.

The next stage of expansion will follow in the middle of the year with the introduction of the M1 line between Eight Mile Plains and Roma Street. Together, the two lines are expected to provide around 30 million additional passenger seats per year. At the same time, the Brisbane Metro's infrastructure will also be further expanded, including extended station platforms, new passenger displays and future operation through the new Adelaide Street Tunnel.

HESS is proud to contribute to future-oriented and sustainable mobility in Brisbane with the lighTram® 25 TOSA - another milestone for high-performance electric public transport on a global scale.
