HESS delivers fully electric articulated buses to Basel

Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB) will continue to rely on proven electric mobility from HESS in the future. Following the successful introduction of lighTram® 25 OPP articulated electric buses on airport line 50, eleven of these vehicles will also operate on the busy line 30 between the SBB station and Baden railway station when the 2027/2028 timetable comes into force.

Line 30 is one of the busiest in Basel. Buses already run every 3.75 minutes during peak times. As no further increases in frequency are possible, BVB will rely on the capacity of 24-metre-long articulated buses in the future. They offer much more room for passengers, plenty of space for luggage or wheelchairs and thus contribute to making public transport appealing, accessible and sustainable.

Tested vehicle concept for Basel
Since early 2023, the HESS lighTrams® 25 OPP have been successfully operating on line 50. Thanks to their high passenger capacity and the “opportunity charging” flexible charging principle, they have become well-established in daily operations. Expanding them to line 30 is a logical step for meeting the increasing mobility needs in Basel.

Long-term partnership
“We are delighted that the Basler Verkehrsetriebe are again placing their trust in our innovative electric buses,” explained Alex Naef, CEO of HESS. “The vehicles have already shown that they are an efficient and sustainable solution for very busy lines. Our geographical proximity and experience mean that we can provide BVB with optimal support throughout the service life of the vehicles.”

Through the use of the new vehicles, HESS is supporting the gradual electrification of Basel's bus fleet and helping to achieve the region's ambitious climate goals.
