The new lighTram® 19 TOSA marks the start of a new chapter for Geneva's public transport operator tpg: the fully electric articulated buses complement the existing TOSA fleet from HESS and take the tried-and-tested concept to a new technological level.
The vehicles are an in-house development from HESS, designed for maximum energy efficiency, comfort and economy. They are based on the Grid-eMotion® Flash fast-charging system - formerly known as TOSA - which was developed in collaboration with Hitachi Energy.
This technology enables charging in just a few seconds at selected stops - without any overhead lines. It allows the use of lightweight batteries and significantly reduces operating costs and CO₂ emissions.
TOSA was initiated in Geneva and is now an integral part of international HESS projects - including in use in Brisbane and Nantes.
The new bus series will be deployed on line 5 from December 2025 and marks the start of the complete electrification of several lines in Geneva by 2030.
